2.- Grammar – Modal Verbs
We are going to look at the following modal verbs:
Can (poder)
Must (deber)
Have to (tener que)
Should (debería)
2.A.1.- Can
- Can + Bare Infinitive (infinitive without to)
- Can’t + Bare Infinitive (Cannot = negative)
We use can to say that something is possible or to say that someone has the ability to do something.
Utilizamos Can para decir que algo es posible o para decir que alguien tiene la habilidad de hacer algo.
Remember:
You can only use Can in the Present and the Past.
Examples:
- I can see the man from my window.
- Can you speak Japanese?
- We can’t go to Paris this weekend
2.A.2.- Must
- Must + bare Infinitive
- Must not / mustn’t + bare Infinitive
We use must to express obligation. Utilizamos "must" para expresar una obligación.
- I must go to work today.
- They mustn’t smoke in this building.
- Must I do my homework?
2.A.3.- Have to
- Have to + bare infinitive
- Do not have to / don’t have to + bare infinitive
We use have to when we talk about external obligation, such as when someone says that something is necessary or important.
Utilizamos "have to" cuando hablamos de obligaciones externas, por ejemplo cuando alguien dice que algo es necesario o importante.
Examples:
- Tonight we have to go to swimming practice.
- They have to go to school on Friday.
- Do I have to go to church today?
2.A.4.- Should
- Should + bare infinitive
- Should not / shouldn’t + bare infinitive
We use should to give advice or to talk about what we think is right or wrong.
Utilizamos "should" para dar consejos o para hablar de lo que pensamos es correcto o incorrecto.
Examples:
- You look tired. I thin you should go to bed.
- Alison works a lot. She should talk to her boss.
- Should we talk to Mum about grandma?
