USE: Past Simple – to express a completed action in the past
Common Past Simple Keywords:
- Yesterday
- The day before yesterday
- An hour ago
- Last week
- Last month
Examples
- Yesterday I cleaned my bedroom.
- Last month I went to Paris.
In these sentences there is only one action.
USE: Past Continuous – to express an action in progress while another action happened.
Common Past Continuous Keywords:
- When
- While
- Whilst
Examples
- I was eating an apple when the dog entered the room.
- While he was writing a letter his mum offered him a drink.
In these sentences there are two actions. One is expressed in the Past Continuous (the action in progress), the other is expressed in the Past Simple (the action that happened).
