Amid

1.- Preposición de lugar: En medio de algo, rodeado por algo, entre

The hut was in the valley amid orange groves.

On the table, amid mounds of papers, were his glasses

The lighthouse shines amid the fog

The dog run amid the flock

I could see the sun amid the storm

The cathedral stood amid the ruins

The temple was visible amid a dense smog

2.- Durante, en el transcurso de algo, en medio de un ambiente determinado

The actor appeared amid a standing ovation

The army was on full alert amid rumours of a terrorist attack

The Prime Minister resigned amid rumours of new elections

It is impossible to study amid all this noise

The army arrived amid strong protests

The group descended the rapids amid fun

b.- Diferencias

b.1.- Amid vs Among

Ambas preposiciones tienen un significado muy parecido aunque hay algunas diferencias.

“Among” se utiliza con nombres contables; los objetos que rodean son identificables, se pueden distinguir:

I left my bike in the parking among the cars

Mientras que “amid” se utiliza con con nombres incontables (ruído, desorden, alegría, niebla…); también con nombres colectivos (gente, bosque, rebaño, equipo…):

The bird flies amid the flock

The firemen entered in the hotel amid the fire and the smoke

b.2.- Amid vs Amidst

La diferencia es meramente estilística; ambas preposiciones tienen el mismo significado.

Mientras que un en el inglés británico se utilizan ambas indistintamente (algunas personas pueden utilizar más una u otra según la zona geográfica de procedencia), en el inglés americano se prefiere utilizar “amid” ya que se considera “amidst” una palabra un tanto arcaica e incluso snob.
