Round
Puede realizar funciones de preposición, adverbio, adjetivo, nombre y verbo. Vamos a ver a continuación sus diferentes usos como preposición.
1.- Preposición de lugar:
1.1.- Alrededor de, rodeando completamente (movimiento o posición)
They built a high wall round the prison
Finished the hike everyone sat round the fireplace
Magallanes was the first to sail round the World
The Earth moves round the Sun and the Moon round the Earth
My sister wears a scarf round the neck
He tied a rope round the tree
The satellite circles round the Earth
1.2.- Por todas partes / numerosas partes de un lugar
We walked with our friends round the city
The director went round the school inspecting all the classrooms
I spent one month travelling round Germany
The flu spread quicikly round Europe
Your room is very untidy: there are lots of things scattered round the floor
She looked round the room looking for her keys
The president took us round the factory
My brother travelled by train round United Kingdom
1.3.- Al otro lado / del otro lado; sortear un obstáculo rodeándolo (movimiento o posición)
Our house is round the corner

2.- Aproximadamente

Diferencias
1.- Round vs Around
“Around” y Round” son preposiciones que tienen diferentes acepciones. Muchas de ellas las comparten ambos términos:
Movimiento circular
The airplane flies around / round the island
Movimientos por diferentes partes de un lugar
When I went to LIsbon I spend the first day walking around / round the city
Pasar / sortear / ir al otro lado
The main street was close so we had to go around / round the park
En la zona o cerca
Her house must be around / round here
The underground station must be around / round here somewhere
Sortear una situación / problema
The engineers are trying to find a solution around / round that technical problem
Aproximadamente
The Mens’s 100 metres final will start around / round 2 o’clock in the morning
A ticket for tonight’s concert costs around / round 30 euros
There were around / round one hundred people at the concert
(*) Con esta acepción se considera más formal utilizar la preposición “about”:
The Mens’s 100 metres final will start about 2 o’clock in the morning
A ticket for tonight’s concert costs about 30 euros
There were about one hundred people at the concert
Para muchos “English Speakers” con los significados anteriores estas preposiciones son perfectamente intercambiables. No obstante se pueden apreciar algunas diferencias.
La preposición “Around” se utiliza más en el inglés americano, donde se considera que la preposición “Round” es un tanto informal.
En el inglés británico se utilizan ambas preposiciones, aunque también se considera ”Round” más informal por lo que se utiliza más en la comunicación oral que en la comunicación escrita. Se tiende a utilizar “Round” cuando se describe un movimiento específico:
The taxi came round the corner
The Earth goes round the Sun
Mientras que se tiende a utilizar “Around” cuando el sentido es más genérico:
Her house must be around here
This house costs around 100.000 euros
There’s a rumour going around the city about Rolling Stone’s visit
